John Florian Riedler, M.D.
Dr. Riedler is the senior practitioner at Virginia Behavioral Medicine. In his thirty-two years of experience, he has treated patients of every background, from impoverished and abused children to celebrities and well-known public figures. Dr. Riedler has evaluated high-profile violent criminals for the courts and cared for victims of traumatic stress.
During his long career in psychiatric medicine, Dr. Riedler has been in private practice, worked at the national level in managed health care, and started regional mental health networks and hospital-based programs.
At VBM, Dr. Riedler is focusing his attention on integrating the neuroscience of mental health care with the scientific treatment of general health care problems, the neuroanalytical approach to behavioral health treatment. Patients are invited to participate in the medical and psychological treatment of their mental, behavioral or addiction problem.
Board Certified by the ABNP and ASAM, and re-certified by the ABAP, Dr. Riedler practices child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry as well as addiction medicine.
Tamara Atkinson, L.P.C.
Ms. Atkinson is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She received her M.S. degree in Psychology at Old Dominion University and has been working in outpation mental health since 1995. Her career has focused on working with adolescents, adults, families, and groups. Her areas of interest include addiction treatment, substance abuse interventions, and management of anxiety and depression.
The primary therapeutic approace used by Ms. Atkinson has a cognitive and behavioral emphasis that includes mood stabilization and personal effectiveness through adaptive coping strategies. Interpersonal relationship skills are also emphasized as part of the path to emotional balance. She currently sees individuals, couples, and families, and conducts two substance abuse treatment groups weekly.
Jennifer Cooke, PA-C
Ms. Cooke treats patients of all ages for conditions including depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, OCD, and mood disorders. She believes VBM's strength is working as a team for more comprehensive and effective outcomes for patients.
Susan Masterson, LCSW
Ms. Masterson is trauma certified, and specializes in PTSD, sexual identity, depression, self-esteem, and anxiety disorders. She also offers women's emotion management DBT style groups and anger management group. She accepts patients aged 18 and older.
As office manager, Ms. Karabinos considers her position that of a 'jack of all trades'. Her education and work experience, as well as time spent living and working abroad has provided her with valuable insight and knowledge. She strives to bring this experience to use in the exciting and challenging task of managing the office and providing the best possible service to all of VBM's patients.
